How to get to Montezuma

Getting to this small beach town from San Jose and vice-versa is pretty easy. The new highway from San Jose – Puntarenas takes only one hour. From there you get on the ferry, which is a beautiful trip and also takes an hour. The drive from Paquera, where you will arrive, to Montezuma, is great, but mostly on an unpaved road. The advantage is that this drive will take you right through the Curu Wildlife Reserve and Tambor.
When you get to Montezuma, 1 ½ hours later, you will fall in love with the Rastafarian and Bohemian-type setting. That’s because it is the artsy and cultural retreat of the Nicoya peninsula. “Peace” and “Free Love”, if not spoken here, are in the air, night and day. You’ll be able to listen to Bob Marley by walking the streets, as his music will come from most shops.

Nature

Because of its lush surroundings, the tow also attracts a lot of Eco-Tourism. It is famous for its hiking, beaches, and waterfalls. A 30-minute walk through nature will bring you to a majestic, 80ft unrivaled waterfall.

The entrance to the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve is located in Montezuma. This National park is a must-see for all lovers of nature. Birds, lizards, and monkeys are abundant here as well as tropical plants, flowers, and trees.
As a matter of convenience, apart from the Puntarenas ferry to Tambor, a water taxi to Jaco (a coastal city on the “mainland”) is available. This is a scenic 45 minutes ride and it is possible to see whales, dolphins, and other marine life.
