Alajuela: Rio Segundo, a panoramic kaleidoscope

Costa Rica’s largest province is Alajuela.  This province is also the largest producer of coffee and sugar in the country. Its capital, the city of Alajuela, is located just 15 miles away from the San Jose and is also the second largest city in the country.

The city of Alajuela is comprised of 14 districts or areas, and one of those districts is ‘Rio Segundo’. Have I lost you by now?

Rio Segundo is a narrow strip of land near the airport at the lower tip of Alajuela. Due to its proximity to the Juan Santamaria international airport, it harbors a vast array of casinos, hotels, restaurants and nearly all the car rentals outlets we are familiar with. All are located on one main road that connects Alajuela with the third largest city in the land, Heredia.

Just behind this one-road commercial parade, you’ll be witness to a panoramic kaleidoscope, ranging from stylish condos, large ranch-styled haciendas, middle anRio Segundo, a panoramic kaleidoscoped lower priced homes, to pasture lands and rolling hills as far as the eye can see.

Every crossroad can take you to something totally unexpected.

The availability of land at a reasonable price and its proximity to so many amenities, has made Rio Segundo a beacon for enclosed, gated communities that seem to spring up like mushrooms.  These communities provide cost effective housing in a secure environment.
