Soccer fans (about 98.5% of this country, by our reckoning) can begin to breathe again after undergoing a couple of months of severe withdrawal symptoms. Soccer season starts Sunday with a full slate of matches.

The new alineations are: Group A, Saprissa, Brujas, Liberia Mia, Puntarenas, Carmelita and San Ramon. Group B consists of Alajuela, Heredia, Pérez Zeledón, San Carlos, Universidad de Costa Rica (UCR) and Cartago. Note, please, that Saprissa (last season champs) and Alajuela (number two) are in separate groups again this year, leading us to wonder if FEDFUT, the national soccer regulating agency, is trying to set up another classic confrontation at the end of the season between these two powerhouses.

The openers will pit Cartago against San Ramon, Saprissa vs. Puntarenas, Pérez Zeledon vs. Liberia, UCR vs. Carmelita, Brujas vs. Heredia and Alajuela vs. San Carlos. We will see if Liberia owner Mario Sotela’s open-checkbook policy toward player acquisition works.
