Perhaps it was because of disgust at the Costa Rica national soccer team’s miserable showing against Granada last Saturday in St. George, but we neglected to give you the results of Sunday’s matches in the CONCACAF eliminations leading to slots in the World Cup. Costa Rica plays again tomorrow here in Costa Rica, hoping to make up for its come-from behind 2-2 tie with the tiny island nation.

Eduardo Li, president of FEDFUT, the country’s soccer governing board, said last Sunday, “If we don’t win Saturday, the first one to go will be me, because I’m the one responsible.” Coach Hernan Medford, whose head is resting precariously on his shoulders after the tie, the 12th non-win in a row for the All-Stars, likely feels he will be the second to go.

Tourney Results Sunday

Panama edged El Salvador 1-0, Canada had an easy time of it with St. Vincent, 3-0. Mexico beat Bekize 2-0, Bermuda got by Trinidad-Tobago 2-1, Haiti and the Antilles tied 0-0. Then there were the lopsided scores. Jamaica buried the Bahamas 7-0 while the United States ran right over Barbados 8-0 almost without seeing them.

Do you see why we wrote that Caribbean nations do not fare well in international soccer usually?
