Saprissa has joined Alajuela in the quarterfinals of the UNCAF Champion’s Cup soccer tourney, but on the strength of its 5-2 win in the opener. The Costa Rican champion lost yesterday to Once Municipal of El Salvador on the latter’s home field, 1-0.
This is the first time in 10 years Saprissa has lost against a Salvadoran team and the sportwriters were in full cry, as were some Saprissa fans, the toughest critics any club has ever had. Even the players lamented the options for goals they had let slip through their fingers.
The club from Tibas will meet the winner of the Puntarenas-Belize FC game. That quarterfinal encounter well may be an all.Costa Rican game because the Puntarenas club comes into its Belize encounter with a three-goal lead.
