In an ironic twist, Puntarenas has qualified for the playoffs and Heredia is out.  Puntarenas will face Saprissa when that club returns from Japan and Perez Zeledon will face Alajuela.  The irony is that at the end of last season, Heredia fired the coach Ronald "El Macho" Mora, because he did not win the championship.  So they hired Guillermo Farinha, who had been bi-champion with Alajuela, to take them to the next level.  However, Puntarenas hired Mora.  So now Heredia has fired Farinha! And Mora is in the playoffs with Puntarenas.  The winner of the playoffs is the automatic sub-champ (winner of the opening phase) and has a right to a playoff with the champion of the closing phase that begins next year.
