As a result of the recent elections 10 political parties are eligible to receive a slice of a 13 billion colon pie, which is .19 per cent of the Gross National Product. Legislators were unable to pass initiatives which would have reduced the political debt to .1 per cent of the debt.
PAC candidate Otton Solís challenged Oscar Arias and the PLN to follow the PAC example and not charge back the Costa Rican people campaign expenses. Although Arias refused to debate Solís one on one during the campaign, he did accept this challenge “Ottón Solís, of PAC, and this servant agree that it is necessary to reduce certain state expenses that are out of line. I have said that it is my intention to reduce the number of consultants and staff for our delegation in the Legislative Assembly. Also to renounce a substantial portion of the subsidy that we have a right to. ”
