After 2 days of counting (official counting), the PLN candidate, Oscar Arias, leads teh PAC candidate Ottón Solís by 9,946 votes after a count of 654 tables, according to the Tribunal Supremo de Elecciones (TSE) at 11:45 pm on Wednesday.
Solís has 55,384 votes while Arias has 65,958.
The president of the TSE, Oscar Fonseca, explained that the counting is going more slowly than expected, because of the narrow margin. The representatives of each group have been more demanding since every vote counts.
The magistrates of the election court TSE has decided to work from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, and Saturdays. The court has 30 days by law to declare a winner. Current projections are for the count to take 3 weeks.
Fonseca said that it is important to note that the provisional results are now worthless. The transmission of data with provisional results that began Sunday ended Monday. The results from the official count cannot be mixed with the provisional results.
In spite of this, the PLN has been adding both and considers that the difference between Arias and Solis is 14,000 votes. Óscar Arias yesterday said he was "absolutely certain" of his triumph and "no one can imagine that 8000 votes will be overturned".
"All I hope is that the loser picks up the telephone and says ‘here I am, at your service, congratulations’ , the same as in civilized countries. This is what I would do if I were not favored with the majority of votes. " Arias said.
On the other hand, the TSE made it clear that they will not declare a preliminary winner, and insisted that the parties not declare themselves victorious.
