United Eliminates Flights to San José; Adds Liberia for High Season

United announced that as of December 16th it will no longer fly from Los Angeles to Costa Rica via Guatemala.

However they will open flights from their Chicago hub to the Liberia airport starting December 17th and ending April 1st 2006.

The company has been in Chapter 11 bankruptcy since 2002 and cited the low profits on the route as the main factor. Now there are more airlines serving Costa Rica, and lately fares have dropped by 50%. Along with the rising fuel costs this made the route unprofitable, even though United flew 3000 passengers a month from LA.
