A strong tremor, measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale, shook awoke residents of the Southern Zone of Costa Rica at 5:04 this morning, reported the daily newspaper La Nacion. No damage or injuries were reported. The area, on the Panama Fault, is currently the most tectonically active zone in the country.
The National Volcanic and Seismic Observatory reported that the earthquake originated at a depth of 23 kilometers with the epicenter located 22 kilometers southeast of Corredores canton near the Panama border. It was felt strongly in San Vito de Coto Brus and even lightly as far north as in southern suburbs of the capital.
