Two Cocaine Shipments Fall
by Rod Hughes
Two tons of cocaine were confiscated in the town of Turrucares and six Colombians arrested. It is the second big blow to international drug traffic in as many days.
Wednesday, an estimated two and a half metric tons of the drug was captured by a Costa Rican Coast Guard patrol boat. In that operation, the traffickers scuttled their own boat and 2,500 lbs. of the packaged drug floated ashore at a beach. While the police were picking up the packages to deprive local drug dealers of the booty, the narcotics traffickers fled but they were recaptured.
In the Turrucares case, police had been watching the property 100 meters east of the railroad line for some time. The Colombians had rented the structure and had set about making enlarging it and making security tighter by reinforcing the metal gates. At the time of the arrest, two welders were at work on the gates but were released after narcotics officers discounted that they were involved.
