In its first eruption since 1994, the Poás Volcano shot mud and water 50 meters into the air before a small group of about 50 tourists. The area was evacuated immediately and visits to the volcano were suspended over the weekend.
According to OVISCORI the eruption on Friday lasted 5 minutes, from Noon to 12:05 pm. Saturday and Sunday the volcano erupted 5 more times and the park will remain closed through Monday afternoon. There is a possibility that the park will open on Tuesday to a limited number of tourist in small groups.
