Although the TSE has yet to declare an official winner, Otton Solís has thrown in the towel, making Oscar Arias the next president of Costa Rica. At 7:30 pm on Friday, Solis admitted defeat while Arias accepted victory almost immediately.
Arias said “I am no longer the candidate of February 5th, I am now the President of all Costa Ricans.” He applauded Solís and said he was willing to dialogue with all the minority candidates. ” In my government I will respect the minorities, without compromising the mandate that the majority has given me.”
In a speech read from his headquarters in San Pedro, Solís recognized that the country needed clarity and declared that he was recognizing the PLN victory at the polls. “I wish him the best and hope that God inspires his performance as president, so that Costa Rica wins.”
The TSE is scheduled to announce official results by Friday of next week.
