The MOPT has begun construction on an 11 kilometer long bike route near Puntarenas, along the Caldera - El Roble section of the highway. A second path will be built later in the year next to the highway from Quepos/Manuel Antonio to Barú.
The first path will cost $4.5 million dollars and will go from the Barranca crossing to the Mata Limon bridge. The project will benefit cyclists and pedestrians, who currently must use the highway.
