The Costa Rican Ambassador in Washington, Tomás Dueñas, has received a preliminary report of the investigation being conducted by Dade County (Miami) detectives in the shooting death of Rigoberto Alpizar. The report was given by a representative of the US Sky Marshals and a diplomat in charge of Costa Rican affairs in the US State Department.
According to the report, Alpizar was seated in the back of the plain, when he abruptly rose from his seat with a backpack clenched to his chest. When a flight attendant asked him to remain seated, he lost control and at some point said he had a bomb. The security officials on the plane, one of them bilingual, ordered him to stop, but he continued out of the plane onto the jetway. When Alpizar tried to put his hand in the bag, they shot him.
Alpizar’s family has an appointment with the Costa Rican Chancellery on Monday and is asking for full access to the results of the investigation. The Costa Rican Ambassador stated "This is the first time that something like this has happened on an airplane in the United States. They are taking this seriously and we expect the investigation to be extensive."
