641 homeless people in San José will receive an insurance card so that they can get attention in clinics and hospitals.  Costa Rica’s universal health care covers everyone, but you must be registered in the system by your employer or pay voluntary insurance in the case of non-emergency care.

The insurance will be valid for six months, and is renewable, but the objective is that they eventually be reintegrated into society. This is the first project of the campaign "Faith and Hope Crusade" being carried out by the City of San Jose, CCSS, Hogares Crea, the Salvation Army and PANI (National Children’s Welfare Office).  The project targets homeless people with addictions, bringing them into treatment programs, helping them reestablish contact with their families and eventually to become productive members of society.
