You were a good boy, indeed, and most astute. Carlos was right. I try to smile and be aimiable in all such dealings even though where I spit afterwards, nothing grows! Now they’ll likely leave you alone because they realize that A. you’re prepared with all “i”s dotted and all “t”s crossed. and B. you’re not about to pay a bribe. No vale la pena (it’s not worth it–this cat’s not going to pay anything under the table.)
We’re assuming, of course, that that’s what they were after. That may be doing them a disfavor. The municipality has heard all the excuses, starting with, “I’m just remodeling.” (That’s the equivalent of, “The dog ate my homework” and is used even when one starts with a bare lot.) So please don’t think they were singling you out by doubting your word. They doubt EVERYONE’S word. I have a hunch that more is built in this country without the proper paperwork than with everything above board, as you had it.
