Linda’s holiday is almost over. We got a lot done. The shoots for the grass are doing well, and some of the seeds have started to sprout. Jose invented a tool to make furrows for the seed so that fewer will be washed away.
It is amazing how fast everything got green with the rain. Fields and roadsides that were burned to clear brush, and sat black all winter have disappeared into grass and brush cover, and crops. People are already cutting with machetes or spraying with poison to keep the roadsides clean. Trees that had no leaves are covered with them now. And the butterflies! All the books said there were many butterflies here, but I saw about the same amount as I would expect to see in Canada in the summer. Now, however, there are thousands. All colours and sizes. It’s fantastic! And all these changes have happened in a little over a month.
So far, the only downside to the rainy season is the increase in the amount of insects, especially mosquitoes and perujas (no see’ems). But, we are coping well with that. It still isn’t as bad as the black flies in Muskoka in June.
